Heat Stress and Lamness

 Heat Stress and Lamness.

Data shows when lying time reduced to below 11 hours per day lameness increases. During heat stress a cows body temperature will increase if there is insuficient heat abatement

Data shows that when body temperatur reaches 39C, the cow automatically stands up. She will stand unless her body temperatur decreases trough an effective cooling. Sufficient airspeed in the lying place will increase resting time.

When standing is the norm it will eventually result in extra lameness. There is around a two month lag time from the highest THI days until lameness happens

Outcomes of heat stress

1_ decline in dry matter intake

2_ decline in milk production

3_decline in milk composition ( fat and protein

4_ lower in ruminal pH from 6 to 5.
